Course de voile - 15 janvier 2004 Sailing Race - January 15, 2004

Ce sera aujourd'hui le vrai test pour Jupiter, car lors de notre première course de la saison la semaine dernière, donc la première course de Jupiter, nous n'étions que trois bateaux et ceux les plus susceptibles de compétitionner avec nous n'étaient pas là, soit Thunder avec Steve Franks comme skipper, ainsi que Henna, avec Ken Long.  Suhail est pas mal compétitif aussi, avec Ken Weller comme skipper, et un très bon tacticien en équipage, soit Nigel Willis, notre prof de navigation "RYA" l'an dernier. Nous avons demandé à notre ami Guy Boulanger, qui est "crew" sur le bateau de Steve, de prendre quelques photos de Jupiter. Today is going to be the real test for Jupiter, for during the first race of the season last week, our first race ever on Jupiter, we were only three boats on the water and the ones that will be our real "competitors" were not there:  Thunder, a Flying Scot with Steve Franks as skipper, and Henna, a Hunter 21 with Ken Long.  Suhail is quite competitive too with her handicap, with Ken Weller as skipper, and a very good tactician aboard, Nigel Willis, our "RYA" navigation teacher last winter. We asked our good friend, Guy Boulanger, who is crewing on Steve's boat, to take some pictures of Jupiter "in action". Notre plus gros compétiteur, Thunder, un Flying Scot qui nous a devancé de 4 secondes sur la ligne d'arrivée, et à droite son skipper, Steve Franks. Our strongest competitor, Thunder, a Flying Scot who won the first race over us by 4 seconds only.  On the right, her skipper, Steve Franks

Dans l'après-midi le vent est tombé presque complètement à certains moments.  Malgré que nous ayons connu un mauvais départ, nous avons par la suite fait le meilleur choix d'itinéraire pour profiter de la moindre brise et nous avons terminé la course à 24 min.50 sec. devant le 2e, en l'occurrence Suhail. Voici quelques photos additionnelles de Jupiter, après la première course. In the afternoon the wind died almost completely at a certain point. Despite the fact that we had a bad start, we made the best itinerary choices to take advantage of the slightest breeze and we finished 24 min. 50 sec. before the second boat, in this case Suhail. Malgré cette défaite par 4 secondes, c'est le bonheur sur ce bateau ! Despite being defeated by 4 seconds, you can see the happiness on our faces !

Le quai n'étant pas accessible à cause de travaux, nous devons laisser Jupiter sur un ancrage étant donné sa quille de plomb, et regagner la terre ferme avec notre dinghy.   Ici c'est l'approche pour attraper la corde du dinghy. Because the jetty was under renovations, we had to leave Jupiter on a mooring and go ashore in our dinghy.  Here is the aproach to catch the mooring line.

Un petit mot ajouté le 22 mars 2004 Après 6 ou 7 courses, notre handicap fut ajusté et même si nous  avons perdu quelques courses, souvent par seulement 30 secondes ou une minute, nous avons été consacrés champions de cette saison de voile sur ce merveilleux Flying Fifteen. Le prix :  un montant de 400$ US qui servira à acheter des pièces pour améliorer nos bateaux, entre autres un enrouleur de foc pour Jupiter !  A few words added on March 22, 2004 After 6 or 7 races, our handicap has been adjusted and even if we lost a few races, often by only 30 seconds or one minute, we are the winners of the Spring Championship on our wonderful Flying Fifteen. Our prize:  $400 USD which will be very useful to buy some boat parts.
