Achat impromptu  - 31 janvier 2004 Unexpected buy - January 31, 2004

Pour le congé du Eid, nous avons été invités par un ami, Eric Pratten, à aller faire de la voile.  Il nous offrait de nous prêter son petit voilier alors qu'il serait sur celui d'un de ses amis.  Le Yacht Club avait organisé cette sortie de 2 jours jusqu'à une ile dans le Golfe,, avec BBQ le soir, dodo à l'ile et retour le lendemain, après un déjeuner copieux sur la plage. Comme Eric n'avait jamais navigué encore sur son propre bateau, nous sommes arrivés à l'avance pour vérifier s'il était en bon ordre.  Pendant que le mécanicien vérifiait un petit bobo sur son moteur, Marc et moi sommes allés prendre un verre au clubhouse.  Et là, nous avons vu sur le tableau une petite annonce intéressante:  un bateau identique à celui d'Éric était à vendre pour un prix qui nous semblait ridicule.  Nous comprendrons pourquoi...   Marc appelle le proprio pour le fun, il nous dit que la clé est à la gate et qu'on peut aller voir le bateau sans problème.  Nous tombons littéralement en amour avec, et l'achetons sur le champ !  Pour la moitié du prix que Éric avait payé le sien.  Car le vendeur quittait le Moyen-Orient après 25 ans, et il quittait dans 2 jours !  Nous avons donc fait le voyage à l'ile sur notre propre bateau ! For the Eid holiday a friend of ours, Eric Pratten, invited us over for sailing. He offered us to take his small sailing boat while he would be crewing on his friend's.  The Yacht Club had organized this 2 day trip out to an island in the Gulf, with BBQ in the evening, overnight on the island and sailing back the day after, after a copious breakfast on the beach.   Because Eric had not yet sailed himself his own boat, we came early to check it out to be sure it's in good condition for the trip. While the mechanic was fixing his engine, Marc and I went to have a drink at the clubhouse. There we're looking for fun at the board and see an interesting ad:  a sailboat (same model as Eric's) was for sale at a ridiculous low price.  We'll tell you why... Marc calls the guy, who tells him that the key is at the gate and we can have a look at the boat right now.  We litteraly fall in love with the boat and we buy it at once for half the price that Eric had paid for his.  The reason: the seller,  after 25 years in the Middle East,  was leaving in two days !  Therefore we went to that trip on our own boat !!

Le cockpit, pas énorme mais peut asseoir 4 adultes confortablement. The cockpit is not huge but can sit 4 adults confortably

Nous sommes donc partis sur notre propre bateau pour ce petit voyage de 2 jours. Nous avons emprunté des cartes marines à Ken, un membre du club toujours prêt à donner un coup de main. Tous les autres propriétaires de voiliers que nous avons rencontrés là sont super sympathiques.  Les cartes sont indispensables dans ces eaux ou la profondeur varie énormément.

So we left for this 2 day trip on our own boat.  Ken, a nice guy at the club lent us a few charts of the area.  All the other Yacht Club members that we've met were very nice people too.   The charts are most useful in those waters where the depth varies a lot.

Accostés à l'ile, après 8 heures de navigation, souvent au moteur par manque de vent.  Notre bateau est celui au centre gauche de la photo. After 8 hours of navigation, motorsailing most of the time because of  the lack of wind, you can see our boat  on the left center of the picture.

Dimanche, 1er février 2004 , c'est le départ et Marc est à la barre. Sunday, February 1st, 2004 It's the start and Marc is at the helm.

Notre petit intérieur.  Pas grand mais juste assez pour pouvoir y dormir relativement confortables.  Et nous avons une petite table amovible  bien pratique. The small interior.  It's not big but just enough to be able to sleep confortably. And we have a small removable table which is really useful.

L'ile  est toute petite, mais un Émir  s'y est construit une petite résidence, alors nous avons droit à un quai pour accoster, des douches et toilettes, et des abris sur la plage pour organiser notre BBQ.  Il parait que nous pouvons toujours y accoster sans problème quand l'Émir n'y est pas. The island is quite small, but an Emir built himself a house on it, so we can berth at his pontoon, use the toilets and shower and the shades of the beach.  It seems that whenever the Emir is not coming, anybody can use the facilities.

Autrefois sûrement une ile où devaient nicher des milliers de sternes, elle est réduite aujourd'hui à cette plantation artificielle. Probably an island where thousands of terns used to nest, it is reduced nowadays to this artificial plantation.

Un sourire qui en dit long !! A smile that tells a lot !!

Au retour c'est Lise qui a tenu la barre tout le long, Marc était bien fier d'elle ! On the way back Lise held the helm all the way.  Marc was really proud of her !

Et pour terminer ce conte de fée en beauté, lors du transfert des titres du bateau la semaine suivante au bureau des garde-côtes , nous avons pu également changer son nom.  Il fut donc débaptisé de ce nom plutôt drabe:  One for One, pour être baptisé de celui-ci, beaucoup plus noble et joyeux :  Eloha ! And to nicely finish this fairy tale, the week after when we did the paperwork to transfer ownership at the coast guards office, we could also change the boat's name.  So it has been de-baptised from this rather dull name:  One for One, to be baptised with this much more nice one :  Eloha !
