Sailing week-end in Bahrain, Dec. 1st and 2nd, 2005
Nous sommes partis très tôt jeudi matin. Notre plan était de se rendre à l'hôtel Novotel, où mouille le boutre traditionnel de notre ami Jean-Pierre, s'ancrer là-bas pour la nuit et revenir le lendemain. C'est à environ 10 milles nautiques du Yacht Club.

We left early on Thursday morning. Our plan was to sail to the Novotel hotel where our friend's traditional dhow is moored, to anchor close by and stay overnight, coming back the following day.  Its about 10 nautical miles from the Yacht Club.

	Pour se rendre là, il fallait passer par un chenal où le courant est relativement fort lors des marées.  Par conséquent on doit sortir avec la marée baissante et revenir avec la marée montante. Sinon le courant risque de nous faire faire du "sur place" au lieu d'avancer. (exemple: vous allez à 5 noeuds au moteur et le courant est de 5 noeuds dans le sens contraire).  Lise est toujours inquiète car les autres navigateurs, lorsqu'ils évoquent le courant dans le chenal, c'est toujours avec gravité. To get there, we have to pass through a channel where the current is relatively strong.  Therefore we have to get out with  low tide and come back with high tide.  Otherwise the current is strong enough that we could just "not move ahead". (example: you're motoring at 5 knots and the current is 5 knots in opposite direction).  Lise has always been worried because when the other sailors talk about the current in the channel, it always sounds very serious.
Comme il n'y avait pas de vent, nous sommes partis au moteur et tout s'est bien passé dans le chenal car la marée devait être basse à 13h41 et nous sommes partis à 11h25, elle baissait donc encore. Lise avait préparé une délicieuse salade de pois chiches et thon pour le lunch. There was no wind so we left the marina motoring and everything went fine in the channel because low tide was at 13:41 and we left at 11:25. Lise had prepared a delicious tuna and chick peas salad for lunch.

Nous approchons du nouveau pont qui relie "Mina Salman", le port commercial de Bahrain de l'île de Muharraq où se situe l'aéroport.
We are approaching the new bridge that links "Mina Salman", Bharain commercial port, to Muharraq island where the airport is situated.

La question qui se pose ici c'est : la mât va-t-il arracher ? The question here is : is it higher than the mast ?	Marc croit connaitre la réponse... Marc believes he knows the answer...
Nous sommes évidemment passés !   Ici nous voyons un ancien fort arabe du nom de Arad Fort, maintenant complètement encerclé par la "civilisation". Of course it was higher, we passed ! Here we can see Arad Fort, an ancien Arab fort, now completely surrounded by "civilization".	Voici un boutre de pêche traditionnel. Tous les jours vers 16h00, des centaines quittent la côte de Bahrain pour ne revenir qu'au lendemain matin avec leurs prises. Here's a traditionnal sailing dhow.  Everyday around 4:00 PM, hundreds of them leave the Bahrain coast and come back the morning after with their catches.
Nous voici en vue de l'hôtel Novotel, et sur sa gauche le boutre de notre ami. Here we are in view of the Novotel hotel, nd on the left, our friend's dhow.	Voici Scaramouch, c'est un boutre de pêche traditionnel reconverti en bateau d'agrément pour touristes. Here's Scaramouch, it's a traditionnal fishing dhow converted into a tourist pleasure boat.
Comme notre ami n'était pas encore là, nous sommes allés jeter un oeil à la marina tout à côté.  Que des bateaux à moteur, pas un seul voilier!  En avant plan, un "bateau taxi" local. Our friend had not arrived yet, so we went to have a look at the nearby marina. Only motor boats, not a single sailboat!  In the foreground, a local "taxi-boat".	Jean-Pierre a de la compétition on dirait.   Malgré que ce boutre soit en bois, il est complètement enlaidi par cette plate-forme à empiler les touristes. It looks like Jean-Pierre has some competitor around. Despite the fact that this dhow is made of wood, it's been made ugly with this upperdeck to pile tourists on.

Puis nous sommes allés jeter un oeil à l'épave d'un vieux boutre saoudien en bois, que Jean-Pierre rêve d'acquérir pour le rénover et en faire un boutre à voile. Le temps est compté toutefois, car ça fait 2 ans qu'il est échoué et s'il n'est pas récupéré bientôt, il sera trop tard car la pourriture aura raison de lui. Then we went to have a look at this old wooden Saudi dhow, that Jean-Pierre dreams of acquiring and renovate into a sailling dhow. Time is an issue though, for this boat has been lying there for 2 years and if it's not put out of the water soon, it will be too rotten to be saved.

To put her back to a decent look, she will need a lot of TLC !

Nous fûmes braves de monter à bord nu-pieds ! We were quite brave to get on board barefoot !	Le Novotel fut construit dans le style typique des anciennes maisons arabes agrémentées de "tours à vent". The Novotal has been built in the typical style of old arab houses embellished with "wind towers".

Au coucher du soleil nous nous sommes ancrés un peu plus loin et puis ce fut l'heure de l'apéro: G&T et grignotines.
At sunset we anchored Eloha a little further away, then it was time for the "aperitif": G&T and snacks.

	Puis ce fut le souper. Au menu: rillettes de canard maison de Lise et fromage Saint-Agur, sur des biscottes. Le tout accompagné d'un bon petit vin rapporté de Turquie. Then it was dinner time. On the menu:  Lise's home made "rillettes de canard" (kind of duck paté), St.Agur blue cheese and crackers.  And to drink : a good red wine brought back from Turkey.
Nous avions une vue exceptionnelle sur le musée de Bahrain. We had a remarkable view over Bahrain Museum.	Puis au dessert, chocolat 70% avec une tasse de thé vert. And for dessert, some 70% chocolate with a cup of green tea.
Puis on a tenté de dormir malgré le show de musique "live" qui se tenait à la marina tout près. We tried to sleep despite the "live" music event that was going on at the nearby marina.	Le lever du soleil nous accueillait pour une nouvelle journée. The sunrise welcomed a new day.
Lise fut à la barre tout au long du retour, qui s'est effectué à la voile cette fois, car on avait une belle petite brise dans le dos. Elle a même navigué l'étroit chenal à la voile, vent de travers, ce qui a chassé complètement cette crainte qu'elle avait du chenal à fort courant.   Lise has been at the helm all the way back, under sail this time, for there was a nice downwind breeze. She even sailed the narrow channel on a reach, which chased completely her fear of the "dangerous channel with a strong current".
Nous avons jeté l'ancre près du chenal pour le lunch et une sieste en attendant la marée montante. We anchored nearby the channel for lunch and a nap, waiting for the rising tide.	Ce traditionnel tjalk hollandais sortait du chenal au même moment. This traditionnal Dutch Tjalk was coming out of the channel at that moment.
Autre rencontre:  des pêcheurs locaux et leurs cages à crabes. Another encounter: local fishermen with their crab pots.	Paysage du mouillage:  usine d'aluminium... Landscape at anchorage: aluminium plant...
	Mais aussi, pour finir en beauté:  ces magnifiques dauphins qui se nourrissent à l'embouchure du chenal. But also, to end this page with beauty : those magnificent dolphins that feed at the mouth of the channel.
