nous allons appeler le gars dont le bateau est derrière sa maison, pour pouvoir
aller enfin jeter un œil à
Bombadil. On ne se crée pas trop
d’attentes, et on se dit que si ce n’est pas le bon bateau, tant pis pour nous,
on aura fait la même erreur que bien d’autres avant nous à la recherche du
bateau idéal. Si cela arrive, on
profitera de nos vacances pour aller au « Miami Boat Show » qui
débute demain, et nous en profiterons pour magasiner un peu et voir ce qu’il y
a sur le marché de l’usagé.
Around 9:00 we will call the guy who lives in the house where Bombadil lies to take an appointment to see the boat. Our expectations are not that high so if it's not the right boat then too bad for us, we would have done the same mistake as a lot of people before us, trying to find the ideal boat. If that happens, we will take advantage of our stay here to go to the Miami Boat Show that starts tomorrow or to have a look around for other second hand boats.

on a vu Bombadil aujourd’hui, sous toutes ses coutures!
Well, we've seen Bombadil today from A to Z !
We did a quite complete survey. And at the end we were quite disappointed by the enormity of the task to put this sailboat back to a respectable state to sail around the world. If it was only esthetics, like redoing the interior, it would be ok, we expected that with a 30 years old boat. But it's worse. The lockers are rotten, and in one of the bilges there is 6 inches of water despite the fact that all the other lockers are quite dry. The engine and the outdrive need to be changed. The main forestay have been repaired in the past and this is annoying us. All the instruments are "archaic" to say the least, except the fishfinder which is even then 11 years old. Conclusion: It was far from love at first sight, so we decided to withdraw from the transaction. We are rather disappointed.

Mais il est
certain que nous allons arrêter de regarder les voiliers à vendre sur internet. On ne peut pas se payer des voyages à tout
bout de champ pour aller voir un catamaran à vendre. Mettons que c’était une petite vacance pour
la St Valentin.

For sure we are going to stop looking at boats for sale on the internet. We can't afford to fly here and there to see a catamaran for sale. Let's put it this way: this time it was a "Valentine Vacation" in Florida !

First thing this morning, we went to have a look at 2 catamarans for sale by 2Hulls here in Fort Lauderdale. A Gemini 105M 1999 and a Wildcat 35 1999 as well. The Wildcat disappointed us a lot. Too big, badly built, etc. We found the Gemini as beautiful as ever but a little too expesive. That was all for today.
Aujourd'hui on a acheté la revue « Sailboat Trader » au dépanneur. C’est un genre de « bateaux-hebdo »
comme la revue « auto-hebdo » au Québec.
Marc a fait
quelques téléphones. Et on a pris
rendez-vous pour demain matin pour aller voir une Gemini 1994 à 85,000$. On sait qu’on ne paiera pas ce prix là pour
un bateau mais c’est le fun d’aller voir ce que tu as pour tel ou tel prix.
Today we bought a classified ads magazine called "Sailboat Trader". There was 2 or 3 interesting catamrans in it.
Marc made some phone calls. He booked an appointment for tomorrow morning to see a Gemini 3400 1994 at 85,000$. We know that we won't buy a boat at that price but it's nice to see what we can have at such a price.
There is also a Heavenly Twins (27 ft) 1983, 35,000$ but it's about 4 hours drive from here. Marc called and he's waiting for a call back to let us know if we can go to see it on Monday. Then we would also see another Gemini in the same area, 1987 at 50,000$.
There is also a Prout Snowgoose 35 ft 1973. And it's right here in Fort Lauderdale.
It looks like we will not waste our time in the next few days.
Nous sommes allé à notre rendez-vous de 1000 pour voir le Gemini à 85,000. C’était dans un quartier pas mal huppé de North Miami. Le gars est semi retraité dans l’immobilier. Le voilier était pas pire mais il y avait quelques irritants et le prix était trop élevé à notre goût.
We went to our appointment at 10:00 to see the Gemini at 85,000$. It was in a quite luxurious area of North Miami. The guy is semi-retired in the real estate business. The boat was not bad but there was some drawbacks and the price was too high to our taste.

Au retour nous avions
un message du propriétaire du Prout 35 ici à Ft-Lauderdale. Je le rappelle et nous prenons rendez-vous pour dans 45 minutes
pour l’accommoder. Petit dîner rapide et
nous nous retrouvons peu après sur le Prout Snowgoose 35,1973. C'est le coup de foudre en mettant le pied sur le pont ! Il est super propre. Il a quand même 32 ans mais il a vraiment
bien supporté les années. Lise dit qu’il
ressemble à un chalet. Sans avoir la
finition originale du manufacturier il est vraiment propre et tout semble en
ordre. Pas de bobo majeur à date et le
feeling est bon. Lise rajoute qu’elle
serait très confortable et se sentirait à l’abri dans un tel voilier pour faire
le tour du monde. Le proprio est très
gentil et simple. Un bon gars il nous
semble. On dirait bien que nous allons
faire une offre et aller faire un essai en mer lundi ou mardi.

Avant de
retourner à l’hôtel nous nous arrêtons dans la boutique de livres spécialisée
pour les navigateurs afin de s’acheter quelques livres de notre liste. Et c’est là que nous avons la 2e
bonne surprise de la journée. Nous y
rencontrons un couple de Québecois de notre âge qui, devinez quoi, font de la
voile comme nous. Jean-Marc et Dorothée,
de St-Jovite, et Pépé leur petit chien, sont ici en vacance depuis 3 mois. Leur bateau est au Nord à Indiantown. Ils sont super sympas et nous nous retrouvons
dans notre chambre à prendre une bière.
Ensuite c’est le souper dans un Irish Pub pas très loin. Il était enseignant d’ultra légers au Québec. Il a tout laissé tombé pour venir s’acheter
un voilier ici il y a quelques années. Il
est descendu en voiture du Québec en magasinant tout le long de la côte
Est. Il a acheté un vieux voilier, 1974,
pas cher qu’il a rénové complètement tout seul. C’est vraiment
spécial comment les gens qui adorent la voile fraternisent très
rapidement. Nous espérons bien garder le
contact et les revoir très bientôt. Lors
du Sea Trial du Prout 35 peut être?

The dinghy on davits with a Johnson 9 HP outboard, the solar panels, and in the down left corner we can see a bit of the BBQ with its own aluminium propane tank.
The Honda 25HP, 4 strokes outboard supersedes the original inboard diesel and its Sonic Sillette outdrive and its poor reputation.

Ce matin
Marc a appelé Jake, le propriétaire du catamaran et lui a fait une offre à
40,000$ (il demandait 49,000$). Après
quelques échanges téléphoniques ils en sont venus à une entente à 42,500$. Et voilà !
Nous sommes officieusement propriétaires d’un Prout Snowgoose 35
pi. Ce sera officiel dans quelques jours
à la signature de la paperasse et quand nous l’aurons payé… ;o)
Cet
après-midi nous sommes évidemment retournés au bateau pour fouiner dans tous
les racoins. Puis vers 4h00 Jake est
venu nous trouver, il nous a expliqué plein de choses ici et là dans le bateau, puis nous a dit qu’il
ferait encore quelques petites réparations.
Il est vraiment correct.
Wow ! What a day !
This morning Marc called Jake, the owner of the catamaran and made him an offer at 40,000$ (he was asking 49,000$). After a few calls back an forth they came to a agreement at 42,500$. "Voilà" !! We are unofficially owners of a Prout Snowgoose 35. It's going to be official in a few days when we'll sign the papers and when we will have given the money... ;o)
This afternoon we went back to the boat to look at it in every corner. And then around 4:00 Jake joined us. He explained to us several things around the boat and told us that there are a few things to fix that he will do for us. He is really nice.

In the starboard hull is the galley. In the front we see the stove, then the sink and big counter. Further away we can see the fridge with its opening on the top. Its huge and very well insulated.

Ce matin nous
sommes allé faire un petit marché pour le lunch sur le bateau avant de
rejoindre nos amis vers 11h00 au bateau.
Nous sommes partis et il faisait super beau. Il faut être vigilant durant les premiers
milles à passer les canaux pour se rendre à la mer. Dans le plus étroit il y a les ponts à
passer. Il faut appeler sur la VHF le
gars qui s’occupe de faire lever le pont, et attendre quelquefois jusqu’à 10
minutes avant qu’il puisse le lever.
Une fois
passés les ponts, le canal s’élargit un peu mais là ce sont les nombreux
bateaux à moteur qui passent à grande vitesse de tous bords tous côtés et qui
nous font des vagues énormes. Pas très
reposant.
This morning we went to buy some food for the lunch on the boat, then we joined everyboday at 11:00 at the boat. Off we went and the weather was perfect. One has to be careful on the canals before getting to the ocean. There are several bridges to cross. We have to call on the VHF the guy in charge of lifting the bridge and sometimes wait up to 10 minutes before he can lift it.
Once the bridges behind us the canal widens a little and then the motor boats pass us in great speed on both sides et create huge waves. Not relaxing at all.
Finally we reach the Atlantic where passes the Gulf Stream. And then it's total happiness. We hoist the sails and have fun.
After a while I went inside and prepared a quick lunch for everyone. Ham sandwiches with bites of salami, "tapenade", guacamole and nachos. Served with beer or wine. Then we've had some cheese and a bottle of port wine, thanks to Jean-Marc and Dorothée.

Marc was not yet owner of the boat but was already playing at putting things apart trying to fix the stiffness of the wheel.

Par la
suite on a invité Jean-Marc et Dodo à venir manger avec nous à l’hôtel. Il nous restait pas mal de poulet cuit. On s’est fait des sandwiches toastés au
poulet, avec une salade. On avait encore
des nachos en entrée, avec de l’humus aux olives.
J’avais
apporté la vaisselle sale du midi pour la laver à l’hôtel et en même temps ça
nous faisait assez de vaisselle pour souper à quatre.
I had brought the dishes from the boat to be able to wash it and also have enough for dinner.
It was a wonderful day. And we must say that we are pretty glad of our buy. Now we have some concrete preparation to do for the next 5 years, before our sailing adventure at retirement.
We are celebrating with Jean-Marc and Dorothée !
On the morning of our departure, Jake invited us for breakfast.
Bye Bye ! See you in july...When Lise will be sailing the boat from Florida to Lake Champlain with our friend Ken who own a similar boat. (Remember our trip on his boat in Turkey ?)
